CatTower's photo metadata remover is a free online tool that shows the location (GPS), camera, date, author and software details stored in a JPEG photo and saves a copy without its EXIF, XMP, IPTC and comment data, in your browser, without re-compressing the picture.

  • Input: one JPEG photo (.jpg or .jpeg), baseline or progressive, up to 20 MB; the file's structure is checked, not just its name.
  • Removed: EXIF (including GPS, camera, dates and the embedded thumbnail), XMP, IPTC/Photoshop data, comments, other app-specific blocks and any data after the end of the image.
  • Kept byte for byte: the image data, the ICC color profile and the JFIF and Adobe headers; nothing is re-compressed.
  • Photos turned by an EXIF orientation (values 2–8) are refused, because removing it would change how they appear; every clean copy is re-checked before download and named after the original with -clean added (IMG_0001-clean.jpg).
  • Privacy: the photo is processed in your browser and not uploaded to CatTower's servers.

How to use

  1. Drop or choose one JPEG photo (.jpg or .jpeg) of up to 20 MB.
  2. Check what it carries: location (GPS), camera and lens, date and time, author and description, and software, each marked Found or Not found.
  3. Select Remove metadata. The copy is checked again before it can be downloaded.
  4. Download the copy, named after the original with -clean added (for example IMG_0001-clean.jpg).

FAQ

No. The photo is read and cleaned by your browser on your device and is not uploaded to CatTower's servers. The details found in it are not sent to analytics either. Anything else running on your device, such as extensions, is outside the site's control.

Removed: EXIF (including GPS location, camera and lens, dates, serial numbers and the embedded thumbnail), XMP, IPTC and other Photoshop data, comments, other app-specific blocks, and any data after the end of the image, such as extra images some phones append. Kept unchanged: the image data, the ICC color profile, and the JFIF and Adobe headers.

No. The image data is not decoded or re-compressed; it is copied byte for byte, and the color profile is kept, so the photo looks the same. The file only gets smaller by the size of the removed metadata.

Some cameras store a photo sideways or mirrored and add an EXIF orientation tag that turns it the right way. Removing that tag would change how the photo appears, so the tool stops instead. Save the photo upright with the resize tool first, then check that copy here again.

No. It removes the hidden details listed above, but not what the picture shows, such as faces, signs, landmarks or reflections, and it can't reach copies you have already shared. Look at the picture itself before you share it.

One JPEG photo at a time (.jpg or .jpeg), baseline or progressive, up to 20 MB. PNG, WebP, HEIC and RAW files are not supported. A file that is damaged, cut short or built in an unusual way is refused rather than guessed at, and nothing is changed.
