In short

CatTower's image redaction tool is a free online tool that hides selected areas of a screenshot or photo with a solid blackout, pixelation or blur and saves a new PNG or JPG in your browser, keeping the rest of the image unchanged.

  • Input: one PNG, JPEG or WebP image, up to 20 MB and 40 megapixels; you can also paste it.
  • Up to 50 rectangular areas, drawn by dragging or typed as X, Y, width and height in whole pixels, each at least 4 × 4 px.
  • Methods: blackout (a solid colour, black by default), pixelate (blocks of 8–48 px) or blur (radius 4–32 px, only where the browser supports canvas blur).
  • Blackout is the safer choice for text; pixelate and blur can sometimes be partly reversed or guessed.
  • Output: PNG or JPG (quality 92, transparency filled with white), named after the original with -redacted added, with no EXIF copied; the image is processed in your browser and not uploaded to CatTower's servers.

How to use

  1. Drop, choose or paste one PNG, JPEG or WebP image of up to 20 MB.
  2. Drag on the image to draw a box over each part to hide, or select Add area and type X, Y, width and height in pixels. Up to 50 areas.
  3. Pick Blackout, Pixelate or Blur for each area and set its colour, block size (8–48 px) or blur radius (4–32 px).
  4. Choose PNG or JPG and select Review final image to see the result at full size with the number of areas per method.
  5. If everything is covered, download the file; it is named after the original with -redacted added.

FAQ

No. The image is opened, redacted and saved by your browser on your device and is not uploaded to CatTower's servers. The areas you draw and the methods you pick are not sent anywhere either. Anything else running on your device, such as extensions, is outside the site's control.

Blackout. It replaces every pixel in the area with a solid colour, so nothing of the original is left there. Pixelate and blur keep a blurred version of the original, which can sometimes be partly reversed or guessed, especially for short text such as numbers. Use them for faces or backgrounds, not for secrets.

Blur uses the canvas blur filter, which some browsers don't support yet. When it is missing, the Blur option is turned off with a note, and Blackout and Pixelate keep working, including the download.

Yes. Undo and Redo go back and forward up to 50 steps (adding, moving, resizing, deleting or changing an area). Reset removes every area and goes back to the original image; you can undo that too.

Yes. Add area creates a box you can set by typing X, Y, width and height in whole pixels. The area list lets a keyboard or screen reader read and select each area's method and position, and with an area's frame focused the arrow keys move it by 1 px and Shift + arrow by 10 px.
