In short

CatTower's Add page numbers to PDF is a free online PDF tool that stamps page numbers on all or selected pages of one PDF, in one of six positions and three formats, and saves a new numbered PDF made in your browser.

  • Positions: top or bottom, each at the left, center or right (6 in all); bottom center by default.
  • Formats written exactly as shown: 1, Page 1, or 1 / 10, where 10 is the original PDF's total page count. Start at any number from 0 to 9999; text size 8–16 pt, margin 12, 24 or 36 pt.
  • Pages: all, or a list such as 1-3, 5, 8-10. Rotated pages are numbered where you see the position, upright.
  • Limits: one PDF of up to 20 MB and 200 pages; encrypted PDFs are not supported.
  • Privacy: the file is read in your browser and not uploaded to CatTower's servers.

  • Number a report or thesis before printing or sending it.
  • Skip the cover and contents and start numbering at page 3 with the number 1.
  • Add “Page 1 / 12” style numbers to scanned documents so reviewers can cite pages.

How to use

  1. Drop one PDF or choose it. The tool reads its page count and page sizes.
  2. Keep All pages, or choose Custom pages and enter pages such as 1-3, 5, 8-10.
  3. Pick one of six positions (top or bottom × left, center or right), the format (1, Page 1 or 1 / 10), the start number, text size and margin. The preview of the first numbered page updates as you change them.
  4. Select Add page numbers and download the new file, named after the original with -numbered.pdf at the end.

FAQ

Yes. Enter any whole number from 0 to 9999. The first selected page gets that number and each next selected page gets one more, so pages 3 and 5 with a start of 7 read 7 and 8.

The total is every page in the original PDF, even when you number only some of them.

Yes. The position is measured on the page as you see it, so a number set to bottom right is at the bottom right of every page, upright, whatever each page’s rotation.

The tool checks every selected page first. If the page list is not valid (for example 5-3, 5- or a page past the end), the start number is outside 0–9999, or the number would not fit inside a narrow page with the chosen margin, it tells you what to change and nothing is processed.

No. The preview and the new PDF are made by your browser on your device and not uploaded to CatTower's servers. Other software on your device, such as browser extensions, is outside what the site can control.

Password-protected (encrypted) PDFs are not supported, and a damaged file may not open. Files over 20 MB or 200 pages are refused before any work starts. Forms, signatures and attachments may not be kept in the result, so keep your original.
